Our First Home - 500 Shady Avenue

The Pittsburgh Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides a "home away from home" for the families of seriously ill children who must travel to Pittsburgh for much-needed medical care. The families leave their homes, friends, and relatives, sometimes traveling hundreds or even thousands of miles, seeking hope and better health for their children. We are always here for the families - 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. We provide comfortable private bedrooms as well as kitchens, laundry facilities and playrooms. Since 1979, the Pittsburgh House has served thousands of families for a modest $11 per night for a room or $20 per night for an apartment. The lodging revenue that the House receives accounts for only 20% of the revenue needed to maintain the House. And though we license our name from McDonald's Corporation, we are not a part of the corporation. We are an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity, and rely on community support to keep providing our services to families regardless of their ability to pay. We therefore rely on support from the community to continue serving our families at low or no cost. |
The House is designed to encourage interaction among our guests to help them cope during an extremely difficult time. Families who stay at our House find other families with similar concerns, as well as staff and volunteers who listen, care and understand.
The thoughtful design of this House allows 16 families the privacy of their own bedrooms, while fostering support networks among guest families with open, shared spaces including: dining areas, kitchens, laundry facilities, living rooms, play rooms, porches and a yard. Ten of the 16 rooms have private bathrooms; the remaining six rooms share three resident bathrooms.
Up to 4 people may stay in a room in the House. All rooms have 2 single beds; additional cots/cribs are provided as needed. Handicap-accessible rooms are also available. The rooms vary in size to reflect the number of family members staying at the House. All rooms contain appropriate bedding and towels, plus a lamp and clock radio.
